How can you quit your job well?

If you're thinking "New Year, new job", you might be reflecting on this question, and it's one that BBC's #WomansHour tackled last week with some great advice shared by the experts.

Here are some of the most important points I heard:

✋ Give yourself a moment to breathe so that you can make sure it's really what you want to do and aren't consumed with big emotions when you say your piece. A walk with a friendly colleague to get things off your chest could help you gain perspective and clarity on what it is you want to do or say.

✋ Try not to burn any bridges. You never know where you may meet your boss or colleagues again or how they might be useful connections in the future, and it isn't worth leaving on a really negative note. What you want to say in the moment may not be the best thing to have said in the near or long-term future.

✋ If you are worried about the loss of income, perhaps consider either asking about a different role you could move into in the same organisation, or take the time to explore other options alongside your work before quitting (this is where a coach can come in useful!)

I know, from bitter personal experience, how stressful it can be to be to desperately want to leave a job but to feel trapped or scared about how to approach things. I also truly believe that life is too short to be stuck in work that's making you miserable.

So if anyone is grappling with this question, feel free to get in touch for a chat, and I'll help you decide on a way forward.
