You have no relation with reality

We think we see the world as it is, and we can feel so certain in our convictions, but our view of the world is clouded by preconceptions, judgements and biases.

Before I moved to the coast, five years ago, I thought British seaside towns in the Winter were the most depressing places on the planet. I pictured seedy half-empty amusement arcades, stale-smelling fish and chip shops, rain-splattered beaches.

In reality, those things exist but there is also so much more here, and I LOVE it, even in the depths of Winter. The things I hadn't considered include the exhilaration of stormy waves crashing against the shore, silvery light on the surface of the ocean, wide expanses of mostly empty beaches and cosy pubs with open fires to warm up in.

When it comes to career change, so many people I speak to have written off potential jobs or even whole industries based on assumptions and a limited perspective.

I encourage them to go see for themselves. To ask people with different careers what it's really like. To get up close and try things out.

Maybe, just maybe (like me with my wonderful new coastal home) you'll prove yourself to be delightfully wrong.
